Description
Hikayat Fandom: Breathing New Life into Malay Storytelling
Hikayat Fandom was born out of two decades of research and passion for the legends and folklore of the Malay world. Its founder felt a deep urgency to preserve these stories and reintroduce them to new generations in creative, meaningful ways.
The turning point came in 2022, after visiting Orhan Pamuk’s Museum of Innocence in Istanbul. Inspired by the idea of a physical space dedicated to literature and culture, Hikayat Fandom opened in Kuala Lumpur’s GMBB, a hub for arts and creativity in the heart of the city.
What began as a bookstore quickly grew into Hikayat Fandom Folklore World, home to the Storyteller Guild and a creative space where books, art, film, theatre, and performance converge. Its guiding pillars are simple yet profound: Hikayat. Heritage. History.
Unlike conventional bookstores, Hikayat Fandom is an experience, one that seeks to rekindle wonder and pride in our civilisation. Just as the West has the Iliad, the Malay world has its Hikayat, carried through time by storytellers and fans. It was this very spirit of “fandom” seen when young volunteers rallied for the first Hikayat launch that gave the movement its name.
Today, Hikayat Fandom draws parents eager to connect their children to tradition, alongside students, educators, and creatives. While its roots are local, its reach is increasingly international, especially through publications and anthologies that bring together voices from across the globe.
At GMBB, Hikayat Fandom thrives as part of a creative ecosystem, collaborating with neighbouring artists and makers. Above all, it stands as a reminder that our stories are treasures, not relics, and that the Hikayat still have the power to unite, inspire, and endure.
